Mool Mantar is the opening verse of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Mool Mantar is the most important and fundamental composition in the Sikh religion. It is the opening verse of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It was composed by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Mool Mantar is a set of 25 words which encapsulate the basic teachings of Sikhi. It contains the essence of the Sikh belief and is the foundation of Sikh spiritual practice. It declares the unity of God and the importance of remembering and contemplating the divine name as a means of attaining spiritual enlightenment. It is recited by Sikhs daily, and it is considered to be the most powerful and important composition in Sikhi

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ॥
ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥੧॥

ikk ōaṅkār sat-nām karatā purakh nirapà’u niravair akāl mūrat ajūnī saipàṅ gur-prasād॥

Mool Mantar Translation

One creator, name is truth,

agentive (doer) being, without fear, without hatred, timeless form, unbegotten, self-existent, known by the Guru’s grace.

Recite:

True at the beginning, true through the ages, is yet true, O Nanak and will be true.
