Entering a Gurdwara

Protocol to enter the Gurdwara

Entering a Gurdwara, or Sikh Temple, requires following certain protocols to show respect for the place of worship and the Sikh faith. Here are some general steps to enter a Gurdwara:

  1. Dress appropriately: It may be appropriate for you to wear loose and comfortable clothing (and with decency) which covers most of your legs. as you may need to sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Low hanging or tight-fitting trousers/pants may not be suitable. Try sitting on the floor at home for a short period to see if the clothing is suitable.
  2. Remove your shoes: When entering the Gurdwara Sahib, the first thing you need to do is to locate the area allocated to removing your shoes. The ladies and gents will have separate areas. Once found please remove your shoes (and socks if appropriate). Wash your hands (and feet).
  3. Cover your head: Before entering the Gurdwara, cover your head as a sign of respect. You can use something like a Dastar / Patka / Chuni / Bandana / Large Handkerchief / Shawl / Scarf / Dapatta etc. Some Gurdwaras may provide something to cover the head, please ask if required.
  4. Wash your hands and feet: Many gurdwaras have a facility to wash your hands and feet before entering the Darbar Sahib (main hall). This is to purify yourself and show respect for the Gurdwara.
  5. Hats, Caps, Hoodies, etc. are NOT permitted
  6. Shorts are NOT permitted. Learn more…..
  7. Alcohol or drugs: When entering Gurdwara one should not be under any influence of alcohol, cigarettes (including e-cigarettes) or any type of drug. These are NOT permitted on any Gurdwara premises
